My Simple Skincare Routine: Cleansing, Moisturizing, and Sun Protection
When it comes to skincare, I’ve learned that keeping things simple and consistent works best for me. There are so many products out there, and it can feel overwhelming trying to decide what’s really necessary. After years of
experimenting, I’ve settled into a routine that focuses on the basics—cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting my skin from the sun. These three steps may sound simple, but they truly make a big difference in how my skin looks and feels each day.
Morning Routine
1. Cleansing
In the morning, I like to start fresh by washing my face with a gentle cleanser. I don’t need anything too harsh because my skin isn’t dirty from makeup or the day’s buildup—it just needs a refresh after sleeping. Using lukewarm water and a soft cleanser helps remove any oils or residue without stripping my skin. I’ve noticed that skipping this step makes my moisturizer and sunscreen less effective, so cleansing is non-negotiable.
2. Moisturizing
After cleansing, my skin always feels ready for hydration. I use a lightweight moisturizer that sinks in quickly, giving my skin a smooth base for the day. Hydration is key for me, especially since my skin can feel a little tight in the mornings. I also look for moisturizers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which lock in moisture. This step keeps my skin balanced and helps prevent dryness throughout the day.
3. Sun Protection
If I could only choose one product to use in the morning, it would be sunscreen. I apply it every single day, no matter the season or the weather. Sun protection is not just about preventing sunburn—it’s about protecting my skin from premature aging, dark spots, and long-term damage. I use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. I apply it generously on my face, neck, and even the backs of my hands. It’s become a habit, and now I feel incomplete if I leave the house without it.
Evening Routine
By the time evening comes, my skin needs a little more care. The goal at night is to remove the day’s buildup and give my skin what it needs to repair and recharge while I sleep.
1. Cleansing
This step feels even more important in the evening. I always take off my makeup, sunscreen, and any dirt or oil that has collected during the day. Sometimes I do a double cleanse—first with an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup and sunscreen, and then with a gentle foaming or cream cleanser. It sounds like extra work, but it makes a huge difference in how fresh and clean my skin feels.
2. Moisturizing
At night, I reach for a slightly richer moisturizer than I use in the morning. My skin has all night to soak it in, so I take advantage of that time to nourish it deeply. A good night cream helps lock in hydration and gives my skin a soft, refreshed look in the morning. I love the feeling of going to bed with my skin moisturized—it’s like tucking it in for the night.
3. (Optional) Extras
While my core steps are always cleansing and moisturizing, sometimes I add in a little extra care in the evening. That might be a serum with antioxidants or a gentle exfoliant a few times a week. I don’t overcomplicate it, but I enjoy giving my skin some added attention when it needs it.
Why These Three Steps Work
I’ve realized that skincare doesn’t need to be complicated. By focusing on cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting, I’m giving my skin what it needs without overwhelming it with too many products. My skin feels healthier, smoother, and more resilient. Best of all, this routine is quick and easy, which means I actually stick with it.
If you’ve been feeling lost in the world of skincare, my advice is to start simple. A clean face, proper hydration, and daily sunscreen can transform your skin over time. Once you’ve built a strong foundation with these basics, you can always add more steps if you want to. For me, this routine is more than enough—and it’s something I look forward to every day.
