Over 40, Tired, and Ready for Change? Start Here

At 40 and Beyond: The Little Changes That Helped Me Feel Like Myself Again

I remember looking in the mirror one morning and thinking, When did I get this tired?

Not just tired from a bad night’s sleep... but the kind of tired that settles into your bones. The kind that makes you put everyone else first and promise yourself, Tomorrow I’ll do better.

If you’re a woman over 40, you

may know exactly what I mean.

Life at this age can feel full in all the best ways—but also heavy. Maybe you’re raising kids, helping with grandkids, caring for aging parents, working long hours, managing a home, stretching every dollar, or simply trying to hold yourself together while everyone around you needs something.

Somewhere along the way, many of us stop checking in with ourselves.

That happened to me.

I wasn’t falling apart exactly... but I wasn’t thriving either. My energy was low. My sleep was off. My skin looked tired. My clothes didn’t fit the same. My patience was shorter. And honestly? I didn’t always recognize the woman staring back at me.

But what I discovered changed everything:

I didn’t need a perfect diet.
I didn’t need expensive supplements.
I didn’t need to become a completely different person.

I just needed to start taking care of me again.

And it started with small changes.

1. I Started Eating to Feel Better—Not Just to Lose Weight

For years, like many women, I thought healthy eating meant eating less.

Skipping breakfast. Drinking more coffee. Pushing through hunger.

But after 40, my body made it very clear—that wasn’t working anymore.

So I started simple.

I added protein in the morning. Eggs, yogurt, oatmeal with nuts... nothing fancy.

I started drinking more water instead of reaching for that second or third cup of coffee.

And little by little, I noticed something surprising:

I had more energy. Fewer cravings. Better moods.

Food stopped being the enemy and started becoming fuel.

2. I Started Moving... Even When I Didn’t Feel Like It

I used to think exercise had to be hard to count.

An hour at the gym. Sweating. Exhaustion.

But one day I simply walked.

Ten minutes.

That was it.

And the next day, I did it again.

Soon ten minutes became twenty.

Then I added light weights at home.

Nothing extreme—just enough to remind my body it was still strong.

And that strength started showing up in other parts of life too.

Skin health often changes after 40 too. I share more in my post [Skin Longevity: Caring for Your Skin After 30]."

3. I Learned That Sleep Is Not Lazy

This one was hard.

As women, we often wear exhaustion like a badge of honor.

But poor sleep was affecting everything—my patience, my appetite, my skin, even my motivation.

So I started protecting my evenings.

Turning off the phone sooner. Keeping the lights low. Saying no to things that drained me.

And for the first time in years, I started waking up feeling more like myself.

4. I Stopped Feeling Guilty for Taking Care of Myself

This may have been the biggest lesson of all.

Somewhere along the way, many women are taught that taking care of ourselves comes last.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

When we care for ourselves, everyone around us benefits.

A healthier woman brings more patience, more peace, more joy, and more strength into her home.

Self-care isn’t selfish.

It’s necessary.

What Healthy Living Really Means After 40

Healthy living after 40 doesn’t mean chasing youth.

It means protecting your future.

It means eating foods that love you back.

It means moving your body because you’re grateful for it.

It means getting checkups, drinking water, managing stress, and giving yourself grace on hard days.

It means understanding that your best years are not behind you.

Sometimes... they’re just beginning.
