So What Exactly Is Fibromyalgia. And What Can Be Done About It?

Fibromyalgia is a disorder which is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, which can be accompanied by fatigue, trouble with sleep, memory and mood issues. Fibromyalgia, is also labeled as fibromyalgia syndrome, is a condition that causes aches and pains all over the body. It is also known that, fibromyalgia is caused by a combination of physical, psychological and biological factors working together. So it isn't possible to pinpoint the exact biological or psychological causes of this syndrome.

The main symptoms of fibromyalgia are: Chronic, widespread pain. Pain that is throughout the body in multiple areas. This pain is often felt in a person's arms, legs, chest, feet, abdomen, shoulders and back. People often describe it as aching, (sometimes dull aches, and others are stabbing burning, and tearing pain), and can be a throbbing type of pain.

Fibromyalgia is more common in women than it is with men. Family history also plays a role. You are more likely to get fibromyalgia if a family member has it. Some medical conditions also raise the risk. Some of which can include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus as well.

Treatment can help, but this condition can't be cured
See a physician as this does require a medical diagnosis

Lab tests and/or imaging is usually not required
It is a chronic: illness, which means it can last for years or be a lifelong problem

What can be done?
Exercise is one of the best therapies. Both aerobic and strength training were found to provide relief and improvement in a person’s physical function.

Don't sit for long periods of time. As Sitting for too long, can cause muscle aches, along with joint stiffness. This may lead to an increase in pain. To prevent these symptoms, and flare-ups, engage in gentle physical activity every day and avoid sitting for long periods of time. Get up off the computer and put down the remote and take 10 minutes to do a little walking (even through your house) or stationary biking.
